In planning the Church of Jesus, Carl Jacobsen wanted to build the most beautiful church in Copenhagen. He employed the renowned Danish architect Vilhelm Dahlerup, who designed a classic early church with a basilica and campanile (detached bell-tower).
The Jacobsen family are buried in the crypts of the Church of Jesus, which is situated very close to the Carlsberg Brewery. The four bells in the church tower bear witness to a family tragedy, as they are each named after one of Carl’s four children who died in infancy - Alf, Beatrice, Thorvald and Erland.
